SUMMER WORK SHOP  –  CLARE SERA  –  WRITING FOR ANIMATION

Born in Scotland, raised in the not so wilds of British Columbia, Canada, Clare grew up surrounded by sentimental expats of Scottish and Irish descent. She was raised on folk tales of leprechauns, faery folk and banshees, legends of Bonny Prince Charley and St. Patrick, and revealed in the whispers that her great granny was an Irish gypsy!

This easily translated to a career in storytelling which began with becoming an improviser with the Vancouver Theatresports League in Vancouver, B.C. From there she was hired to work at Disneyworld in Florida, doing everything from walk about characters to live action shows.

While in Florida she and her husband became founding members of the award winning SAK Theatre Comedy Lab in Orlando, where she ran the Orlando Theatresports League and she wrote many of their new plays. After a few bites from Hollywood film and television producers, she and hubby moved to Los Angeles and Clare had a wonderful time working as an actress alongside Julie Andrews (The Princess Diaries 1 and 2) and Fred Willard (You Bet Your Honkey).

Wanting to focus her career on writing, she took a position as a writer’s assistant to Karey Kirkpatrick (Chicken Run). Her first screenwriting gig was on the feature animation Curious George for Universal Studios where she had the most fun of working with Will Ferrell, who voiced the Man in the Yellow Hat. She went on to consult and write on numerous family films and animated projects including The Spiderwick Chronicles, Imagine That, Dorothy of Oz, focusing on family, working with studios including Disney, Paramount, and Sony.

Some of her recent credits include Blended which she wrote, starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, for Warner Brothers (2014), and her animated feature film Smallfoot (2018) which starred Channing Tatum and Zendaya, was also distributed by Warner Bros. Clare is currently writing a feature length script for the animated series Max and Ruby.

Currently living in Los Angeles with her husband and totally a nuts dog. Clare is a proud partner in Powerscourt Pictures, a Northern Ireland based, family focused, film and TV production company!
