Colum Eastwood’s The Morrigan to film in Northern Ireland

Date Posted: October 12, 2023

Colum Eastwood’s second feature film The Morrigan will  start shooting on 6th November in Northern Ireland.

Starring Saffron Burrows (BagHead, The Deep Blue Sea, Troy) the film concerns a successful archaeologist but absentee mother (Burrows) who travels to Ireland to excavate a centuries old tomb.  But within the site lurks a danger hidden from mankind for centuries.  Once it is unleashed she must battle to save her rebellious teenage daughter from possession by a vengeful Pagan War Goddess, The Morrigan.  The cast is rounded out by James Cosmo (The Hole In The Ground, Braveheart, Highlander) and Toby Stephens (Black Sails, Lost In Space).

Written and directed by Screen Star of Tomorrow Colum Eastwood and based on the short film of the same name The Morrigan. Colum has previously written and directed Black Medicine which came through Northern Ireland Screen’s New Talent Focus scheme. The Morrigan is produced by Ashley Holberry and Gavin Cosmo Mehrtens of Cowboy Cosmonaut Films.   Finance is provided by Quickfire Films, Northern Ireland Screen, M2 Mediapost and private equity.

Holberry and Mehrtens who met at Working Title have an increasingly busy slate with their survival thriller The Bayou, which they are producing alongside genre specialists Tea Shop (47 Metres Down, Fall) also scheduled to begin shooting this year.

AMP is handling worldwide sales on The Morrigan.

James Norrie of AMP commented: “The Morrigan breathes new life into the demonic possession genre.  With its rich pagan folklore it manages to be a balls to the wall horror, and a brilliant female-centric genre movie showcasing just how far a mother will go to protect her child.  We are thrilled to be aboard”.
