Cinema Eye Honors, the organization founded in 2007 to celebrate outstanding artistry and craft in nonfiction filmmaking, has announced the full slate of nominees for its 16th Annual Awards Ceremony. Nothing Compares from Belfast director Kathryn Ferguson is among the prestigious list of nominees. On top of bring honoured in ‘The Unforgettables’ category Nothing Compares has also been nominated for Outstanding Debut, Outstanding Original Score and the Audience Choice Award.

For the first time, global documentary lovers selected this year’s Audience Choice Prize nominees from a Long List of 16 films voted on by Cinema Eye’s nominations committee. Over seven days, more than 20,000 voters from around the world cast ballots online. Online voting to determine the winner of the Audience Choice Prize will take place in December 2022.

Nothing Compares charts Sinéad OʼConnorʼs phenomenal rise to worldwide fame and examines how she used her voice at the height of her stardom, before her iconoclastic personality led to her exile from the pop mainstream.

Focusing on O’Connor’s prophetic words and deeds from 1987 to 1993, the film presents an authoritative, richly cinematic portrait of this fearless artist through a contemporary feminist lens.

The archive-led documentary features era-defining music videos and concert performances alongside previously unseen footage from this period. The film is underpinned by a new interview with Sinéad herself, in which she reflects on events in her own words, and from a present-day perspective. Intimate first-hand contributor interviews add to the tapestry with additional insights from contemporary artists, musicians and social commentators introducing broader themes of Irish history, politics and global activism, all the while reflecting on Sinéad’s artistry, impact and legacy.

Historically, films nominated for Cinema Eye will often go on to receive other nominations and critics prizes. Over the last five years, 92% of the Oscar nominees for Best Documentary Feature were also Cinema Eye nominees, and 88% of Oscar nominees had received multiple Cinema Eye nominations.
