Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund Announces 2024 Funding Decisions.

Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund (ILBF) is delighted to announce its latest funding decisions for 2024. Funding was awarded across a wide genre of content with a total of 15 projects receiving funding. The aims of the ILBF are to promote the production and broadcast of quality Irish language content for an audience in Northern Ireland and beyond and to help grow the local Irish language production sector.
Dearcán Media received funding to produce Mac Líammóir, a feature-length documentary for TG4 about Micheál Mac Líammóir’s long and productive life as an actor and playwright at the centre of Irish cultural life. In Brú, a 2-part, all-access, observational documentary series by Brassneck Productions for TG4, we explore the pressures of high-level sport in the 21st century and the impact that pressure has on young athletes. Beloved Media was awarded funds to produce Néaltrú, a documentary for TG4 about the McNally family’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. This heartfelt film focuses on the fragility of life and its challenges, and how the family deal with these challenges with grace and humour.
Paper Owl Films will produce the second series of Lí Ban, a Celtic animé series written by Máire Zepf for TG4, which features a unique retelling of Celtic mythological stories. Also for TG4 is Blinky Bill The Movie, a children’s feature-length animation, produced by Zoogon, sees a young and mischievous koala embarks on a journey across the wild and dangerous Australian Outback in the hope of finding his missing father. Zoogon will also work with Dog Ears to produce Irish language versions of the popular pre-school animated TV series Puffin Rock, Series 1,2 and 3, for RTÉJr.
Below the Radar will produce ADHD agus Mise, in this one-off factual documentary for RTÉ, TV Presenter Róisín Ní Thomáin embarks on a deeply personal journey to reveal her own relationship with ADHD, dyspraxia and the autism spectrum. The company also received funding for Breith, Beatha, Bás, a 3-part series for RTÉ which will follow celebrants from across Ireland as they navigate both the joyful and sorrowful moments in people’s lives, revealing what the Irish spirit of celebration looks like in a modern-day Ireland.
Production funding was awarded to Village Films for Ag Dul Abhaile, a drama project developed through the Gealán scheme for low budget features. In this drama for BBCNI and TG4, a young woman forms an unlikely bond with Éilis, an older woman who is suffering from dementia. Also for BBCNI and TG4, Umbrella Films received development funding for the second season of Crá, a slick murder-mystery drama series set in the heart of the Donegal Gaeltacht.
Big Mountain Productions received funding to produce The Sands: Clann an Cheoil, a documentary for RTÉ1 that looks at one of Ireland’s most famous musical families. Macha Media will produce Scéill Uí Néill: The Forgotten Kings Of Ireland, a landmark drama documentary series for BBC and TG4, which uncovers the story of the O’Neill dynasty, one of the oldest royal families in the world, and the ancestors of more than 10 million people. Ronin Films will develop Slán Go Feoil for RTÉ, a documentary series that will explore the increasing trend of Irish people transitioning to a vegetarian lifestyle.
Raidió Fáilte was funded to continue its work providing Irish language training courses in radio production, online content and podcasting.
