Date Posted: November 27, 2018
It was lights, camera and action as Northern Ireland’s young film-makers demonstrated their creative skills at the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment’s (CCEA’s) annual Moving Image Arts Showcase.
22 Moving Image Arts students from across GCSE, AS Level and A Level saw their work screened at the Brunswick Cinema, Derry~Londonderry and Belfast’s Odyssey Cinemas, in front of a combined audience of over 600 people.
CCEA’s CEO Justin Edwards commented:
“This year marks the 15th anniversary of the introduction of CCEA’s A Level Moving Image Arts qualification. The work showcased at this event is a credit to the students, their imagination, creativity and skills and we are delighted to be able to provide them with this opportunity to share their stories with us. Congratulations to all our students having their work screened at this year’s showcase”.
Chris Shaw, Cinemagic Festival Programmer, commented:
“I would like to congratulate all of the young filmmakers and applaud their talent and dedication in producing a fantastic portfolio of short films.
The Moving Image Arts showcase illustrates not only the growing talent among our young people but the vast range of skills they can bring to the creative industries from planning, time management, idea generation and directing. Cinemagic’s ethos is to nurture and celebrate young filmmaking talent and today’s collaboration is an example of this, indeed the whole event compliments our objectives to inspire and motivate young people through the medium of film.”
Bernie McLaughlin, Foyle Film Festival Director & Programmer at The Nerve Centre commented:
“Foyle Film Festival are delighted to once again welcome the work of Moving Image Arts students as part of our annual education programme. This year marks the 15th Anniversary of the launch of the Moving Image Arts Showcase, in association with CCEA, and sponsored by City of Derry Crystal. To celebrate this important milestone, the festival has introduced the Moving Image Arts Programme at this year’s Shorts To Features Conference (Saturday 24 November). The programme aims to give a platform to successful students to screen their work and network with top film industry professionals. The festival looks forward to featuring the work of Moving Image Arts Students in future years.”
Bernard McCloskey, Head of Education at Northern Ireland Screen and chair of the judging panel commented:
“I’d like to add a personal note of congratulations to all the students whose film and animation work has featured in this year’s Moving Image Arts Awards. The high standard of creativity on show has demonstrated yet again the breadth and depth of talent taking part in this exciting qualification.
The skills acquired by Moving Image Arts students in ideas generation, production planning, team leadership and project management have been commented on by industry leaders who recognise the immense value it provides for those young people wanting to develop careers in this fast growing and dynamic industry.
We are delighted to be working closely with CCEA in the development of Moving Image Arts and supporting the annual showcase event celebrating student achievement.”
The 2-day event catered for every taste, with a grisly zombie horror story; a witty sci-fi comedy and a stylish crime thriller being just some of the film and animation productions on show.
