Michael Davitt: Radacach, TG4, Wednesday 29 May at 9.30pm

Dearcán Media’s new drama-documentary Michael Davitt: Radacach presents the life of Michael Davitt, the Mayo born revolutionary and land activist, a hugely significant figure in Irish and British political life in the late 19th century.
The documentary, which received funding support from Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund, broadcasts on TG4 on Wednesday 29 May at 9.30pm.
Davitt’s work with the Irish Land League in the 1880s, changed the shape of Irish society. By breaking the power of the landlord class, Davitt and the Land League improved the lives and prospects of countless Irish people, and created the conditions that led to later cultural and social change as a more settled population turned their thoughts to economic and political independence.
The documentary demonstrates the timeless lesson of Davitt’s life and work – that poverty and inequality are moral questions that have to be resolved by those in power, and that the needs of the majority have to be considered over those of a privileged minority.
Davitt’s life and legacy is considered by contributors Fearghal Mac Bhloscaidh, Síobhra Aiken, Aindrias Ó Cathasaigh, Carla King, Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh, Mary Harris, Cormac Ó Comhraí, Dara Folan and Terry Golway.
“Davitt was a Fenian, he was a political prisoner, a land activist, a member of parliament, a journalist, and a historian. He did all those things, but throughout it all he had one goal, he wanted to promote the liberation of people, in Ireland, and throughout the world.”
Aindrias Ó Cathasaigh, Historian
A repeat of the documentary broadcasts on Friday 31st May at 11.20pm on TG4.
Michael Davitt: Radacach, TG4, Dé Céadaoin 29ú Bealtaine ar 9.30i.n.
Léiríonn an dráma/clár faisnéise nua, Michael Davitt: Radacach, saol Michael Davitt, an réabhlóidí agus gníomhaí talún a rugadh i Maigh Eo, pearsa mór le rá sa saol polaitiúil in Éirinn agus sa Bhreatain sa 19ú haois.
Ba é Dearcán Media a rinne an clár do TG4 agus le maoiniú ó Chiste Craoltóireachta Gaeilge Scáileán Thuaisceart Éireann, agus taispeánfar é ar TG4, Dé Céadaoin 29 Bealtaine ar 9.30i.n.
D’athraigh an obair a rinne Davitt le Conradh na Talún sna 1880í cruth sochaí na hÉireann. Trí bhriseadh na cumhachta a bhí ag aicme na dtiarnaí talún, cuir Davitt agus Conradh na Talún feabhas ar shaolta agus féidearthachtaí na mílte in Éirinn agus chruthaigh siad na coinníollacha le haghaidh athruithe cultúrtha agus sóisialta, mar a chas daonra a bhí níos socraithe a gcuid smaointe chuig neamhspleáchas eacnamaíoch agus polaitiúil.
Léiríonn an clár faisnéise an ceacht síoraí atá ag obair Davitt – gur ceisteanna morálta iad an bochtanas agus an neamhionannas agus caithfear iad a réitiú ag iadsan leis an chumhacht agus go gcaithfear smaoineamh ar riachtanais an fhormhóir thar an mionlach a bhfuil fabhar acu.
Cuimhnítear saol agus oidhreacht Davitt ag rannpháirtithe Fearghal Mac Bhloscaidh, Síobhra Aiken, Aindrias Ó Cathasaigh, Carla King, Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh, Mary Harris, Cormac Ó Comhraí, Dara Folan agus Terry Golway.
“Fínín a bhí in Davitt, príosúnach polaitiúil, gníomhaí talún, feisire parlaiminteach, iriseoir agus staraí. Rinne sé na rudaí sin ar fad, ach tríd an iomlán, bhí cuspóir amháin aige, bhí sé ag iarraidh saoirse na ndaoine, in Éirinn agus ar fud an domhain, a chur chun cinn.”
Aindrias Ó Cathasaigh, Staraí
Beidh athchraoladh den chlár ar siúl ar an Aoine 31ú Bealtaine ag 11.20i.n. ar TG4.
