About the Digital Film Archive (DFA)
Launched in November 2000 as part of the British Film Institute’s Millennium Project, Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive is a free, public-access resource. Continuously expanding, it contains thousands of hours of film and video, dating from 1897 to the present. The collection captures Northern Ireland’s society and culture over the decades, but also includes footage of pre-Partition Ireland, making it an invaluable resource for local, UK, and international audiences.
The DFA is a comprehensive collection of moving images, including broadcast news, feature films, television dramas, sports events, documentaries, animations, light entertainment, amateur footage, and newsreels. It offers an immersive experience of Northern Ireland’s cinematic history.
Accessing the Digital Film Archive
You can access the DFA from the comfort of your own home or visit any of the DFA Network partners across Northern Ireland, where the archive is available via dedicated terminals. These locations include museums, art centres, and universities, making it easy to explore this valuable collection.
