‘Kneecap’ Getting Irish Re-Release Following BAFTA Nomination Success

Date Posted: January 23, 2025

Rich Peppiatt’s acclaimed comedy-biopic KNEECAP, about the Belfast rap trio of the same name, is heading back to Irish cinemas from Friday 24th January after landing six BAFTA nominations.
Wildcard Distribution is re-releasing KNEECAP across the country exactly a year after it became the first Irish-language film to world premiere in Sundance 2024, where it became one of the breakout hits of the festival and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics.
Following its world debut, the film captivated audiences at major festivals like Sundance London, Karlovy Vary, Tallinn Black Nights, Tribeca, and SXSW. As the opening feature at the Galway Film Fleadh, it struck a chord with Irish audiences, earning three awards, including the Audience Award. Last month, the film dominated the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), taking home seven awards, including Best British Independent Film, Best Debut Screenwriter (Peppiatt), Best Joint Lead Performance, Best Casting, Best Editing, Best Original Music, and Best Music Supervision. Sharing the wild and semi-fictitious story of how KNEECAP came together as a band and their proud use of the Irish language, Kneecap had become a critically acclaimed Irish box office sensation.
