Puffin Rock agus Cairde nua to screen at IFI Family Festival

PUFFIN ROCK AGUS CAIRDE NUA, the Irish language version of the new animated feature from Derry-based Dog Ears and Kilkenny-based Academy Award-nominated Cartoon Saloon (Wolfwalkers) is screening as part of Irish Film Institute Family Festival 2023 in Dublin, this Sunday 20th of August. Based on the award-winning television series PUFFIN ROCK, the film is the first animated feature to be produced in Northern Ireland.

PUFFIN ROCK AGUS CAIRDE NUA features a host of Irish voice talent including Dónal Mac Giolla Chóill, Mary-Kate Page, Ava Campo, Lorcán Mac Daibhéid, Emer Ní Chléirigh, Peter Eoghan McCormack, Caoimhe Ní Dhaibhéid, Ultan McCloskey Hudson, Ryan Hogan and Ciara McCrickard.

Celebrating Ireland’s magnificent natural environment with themes of belonging, courage, and friendship PUFFIN ROCK AGUS CAIRDE NUA follows family favourites from the animated series Oona, Baba, May and Mossy who are joined by a new cast of characters as Isabelle, Phoenix, and Marvin arrive on the island. When the last Little Egg of the season disappears under mysterious circumstances Oona and her new friends race against time to bring the Little Egg home before a big storm hits Puffin Rock and puts the entire island in danger.

The screenplay for PUFFIN ROCK AGUS CAIRDE NUA was written by Sara Daddy who was Head Writer on the original television series. The film is produced by Paul Young, Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey from Cartoon Saloon and John McDaid and Fionnuala Deane from Dog Ears, with the support of Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund and Screen Fund, Screen Ireland, RTÉ, and BBC Alba. The screenplay was adapted to Irish by Art Hughes with Zoogon producing the Irish language version of the film.

Áine Walsh, Head of the Irish Language Broadcast Fund at Northern Ireland Screen, commented, “The ILBF is delighted to support the Irish language version of this beautiful, animated film. This is a wonderful opportunity for Irish speaking families to enjoy Puffin Rock agus na Cairde Nua for the first time, and we look forward to further screenings which will extend this opportunity to Irish speaking children and families throughout the country.”

The original television series PUFFIN ROCK was nominated for an International Emmy Award and picked up two Kidscreen Awards and a Royal Television Award and was acquired by various broadcasters across the world.
