Paul Muldoon documentary airs on BBC Two NI on Sunday
Date Posted: January 27, 2023
Armagh-born, Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Muldoon is the focus of a new film, Paul Muldoon: Laoithe’s Liricí on Sunday 29th January at 10:30pm on BBC Two Northern Ireland. The bilingual feature-documentary was produced by Below the Radar TV with support from Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.
Through words specially written by the poet himself, it features collaborations with a stellar line-up from the world of music, film and TV including Paul Simon, Bono, Ruth Negga, Liam Nesson, Van Morrison, Moya Brennan and Iarla Ó Lionáird.
Muldoon is a global great of contemporary culture. For him, music matters almost as much as poetry and he sees little difference between a poem and song lyrics. In the programme, directed by acclaimed filmmaker, Alan Gilsenan, viewers are taken on a journey, through words composed by himself exploring life and language in a series of musical collaborations with his acquaintances from film and music.
Narrated by Paul, key moments in his personal and creative life are explored by many of the musicians and artists Paul has worked alongside. His work, and world, on both sides of the Atlantic, over the course of his life which began as a radio producer with BBC in Belfast and culminated with his Chair of Poetry in Princeton University, is reflected in the range of special guests and contributors who participate in the telling of Muldoon’s life.
The poet himself said: “I was thrilled when director Alan Gilsenan fell in with my vision of a film that would have a much less predictable aspect. Thrilled, too, that Below the Radar along with BBC and TG4 were so enthusiastic in their support of our determination to do something out of the ordinary.”

Réimse d’aíonna agus de rannpháirtithe speisialta a insíonn scéal bheatha Muldoon.
Arsa an file féin: “Bhí lúcháir an domhain orm nuair a d’aontaigh Alan Gilsenan le m’fhís de scannán nach mbeadh ar dhóigh ar bith intuartha. Lúcháir fosta go raibh Below the Radar, le cois BBC agus TG4, chomh díograiseach sin lena dtacaíocht agus lena ndúthracht le rud éigin as an ghnáth a dhéanamh.”
