New Irish Language series follows the lives of people training to work on the front

Date Posted: April 14, 2023

999 Faoi Oiliúint is a new Irish Language Broadcast Fund documentary series that follows the lives of men and women training for a service on the front line. The four-part series produced by Below the Radar will begin on RTÉ One on Monday 17th April at 8pm and BBC Two Northern Ireland on Monday 29th May at 10pm.

Twelve-hour shifts, on-the-spot decision-making, life-and-death scenarios and a diminished social life. Signing up for the emergency services is an all-embracing commitment. It’s a vocation. And it’s not for everyone.

Whether it’s working as a firefighter, a paramedic, volunteering for mountain rescue or the coast guard, 999 Faoi Oiliúint will follow these new cadets as they undergo intense and gruelling training and find out if they have what it takes to make the grade.

The series features new cadets from Galway Fire Service, Mayo Mountain Rescue, Foyle Search and Rescue, Dublin Fire Service, National Ambulance Service Ireland, Lough Neagh Search and Rescue and the Irish Coast Guard, as they navigate their way through intense training and deal with real-life call outs.

Filmed over the course of a year the new cadets in 999 Faoi Oiliúint display the shared traits of strength, determination, grit and ultimately an unwavering devotion to their work. The peaks and troughs of training will be placed under a microscope, and we see how each trainee emerges from the challenges of being pushed to their limits while moving through the ranks of examinations and training.

Is sraith faisnéise úrnua de chuid an Chiste Chraoltóireachta Gaeilge é 999 Faoi Oiliúint, ina leantar saol na bhfear agus na mban a théann i mbun oiliúna le dul ag obair ar an líne thosaigh. Is é Below the Radar a léirigh an tsraith cheithre chlár a chraolfar an chéad chlár Dé Luain an 17 Aibreán ag 8 i.n. ar RTÉ One agus Dé Luain an 29 Bealtaine ag 10 i.n ar BBC Two NI.

Sealanna oibre dhá uair an chloig déag, cinntí le déanamh ar an toirt, cásanna bás nó beatha agus saol sóisialta in áit na leathphingine. An té a théann i mbun oibre leis na seirbhísí éigeandála, bíonn a shaol sáite ann. Is gairm é. Agus ní gairm é a oireann do chách.

Sa tsraith 999 Faoi Oiliúint leanfaimid na hoiliúnaithe nua seo agus iad ag dul faoi dhianoiliúint throm – bíodh sin an comhraiceoir dóiteáin, an paraimhíochaineoir, an tarrthálaí sléibhe, nó an garda cósta – agus gheobhaimid amach an bhfuil siad inchurtha leis an obair.

Beidh oiliúnaithe nua ann ó Sheirbhís Dóiteáin na Gaillimhe, Tarrtháil Sléibhe Mhaigh Eo, Cuardach agus Tarrtháil an Fheabhail, Seirbhís Dóiteáin Bhaile Átha Cliath, Seirbhís Náisiúnta Otharcharranna na hÉireann, Cuardach agus Tarrtháil Loch nEathach agus Garda Cósta na hÉireann. Leanfaidh 999 Faoi Oiliúint na hoiliúnaithe nua i rith na dianoiliúna acu agus iad ag dul i ngleic le fíorghlaonna amach.

In imeacht bliana a taifeadadh 999 Faoi Oiliúint agus léiríonn na hoiliúnaithe nua a neart, a ndíograis agus a misneach gan trácht ar an tiomantas daingean buan atá acu dá gcuid oibre. Faighimid léargas grinn ar rothaí móra na hoiliúna agus feicfimid conas a éiríonn le gach oiliúnaí na dúshláin mhóra a chuirtear rompu a shárú de réir mar a chuireann siad na measúnuithe agus an oiliúint díobh.
