Irish Language Broadcast Fund announces funding decisions for 2023

Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund (ILBF) is delighted to announce its latest funding decisions for 2023. Funding was awarded across a wide genre of content with a total of 16 projects receiving funding. The aims of the ILBF are to promote the production and broadcast of quality Irish language content for an audience in Northern Ireland and beyond and to help grow the local Irish language production sector.

Under our arts documentary initiative with BBC and TG4, Amharc, Below the Radar will produce Neil Martin: Cumhacht an Chomhair. The film will tell the story of composer Neil Martin, who embraces art in every form across a year of collaborations. The company’s popular portal which features newly-created video content and dynamic written journalism Meon Eile.ie will also be supported for a 12th year.

Big Mountain Productions received funding to produce a feature documentary for TG4 on Ireland’s foremost traditional music group, The Bothy Band. The documentary will bring the band together for an amazing once in a lifetime performance featuring surviving members Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, Matt Molloy, Dónal Lunny, Kevin Burke, Paddy Glackin and Paddy Keenan.

Macha Media’s Reiteoir! for BBC NI and RTÉ will delve into the refereeing crisis in the GAA, an amateur sport where officials get barely more than their expenses but plenty of grief, from players, managers, commentators and spectators.

Strident Media’s An Chamógaíocht, for BBC NI and TG4 will celebrate the birth & growth of the world’s fastest field game as the sport faces its biggest challenge from ancient roots to modern sensation and Scéalta Na Lochanna for RTÉ, goes on a voyage along the shores, beneath the waves and into the skies of Ireland’s two greatest landmarks Lough Neagh and Lough Corrib.

Ceol Comhrac 1798 will see Imagine Media explore the stories and the songs of 1798 in a four-part series for TG4.

Dearcán Media received funding for An Lámh Láidir, a one hour documentary for TG4, which celebrates 100 years of the national sport of handball, which has seen a revival in recent times.  The company was also supported to produce Ag Aistriú Thar Lear for RTÉ which will explore the thriving community of Irish language translators in Brussels.

Ronin Films will bring the ultimate Irish cleaning show to TG4, led by a craic-team of Donegal cleaners in Is Mise le Mess.

In our low-budget drama feature initiative Gealán, Púca Pictures was supported to produce Aontas. Caught up in a local conspiracy, a grieving mother must choose between community justice and personal revenge. The film will have a theatrical release before airing on TG4 and BBC NI.

Support was also given to Zoogon’s Daisy and Ollie, the pre-school series which encourages young children to be curious about the world around them. The show will return to Cúla 4 for three more series.

Development funding was awarded to TAUNT for a short, animated feature Nollie. Nollie thinks he’s a regular run-of-the-mill deer, but his world is turned on its head when he discovers that he’s the last Irish elk in existence.

Macha Media also received development funding for Rud le Rá, a series of short dramas for post primary level Irish language learners.

Is iad na haidhmeanna atá ag an ILBF, ná léiriúchán agus craoladh d’ábhar ardchaighdeánach sa Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn ar mhaithe le lucht féachana i dTuaisceart Éireann is níos faide i gcéin, agus cuidiú le hearnáil áitiúil an léiriúcháin Ghaeilge.

Mar chuid dár dtionscamh, Amharc, leis an BBC agus TG4, léireoidh Below the Radar Neil Martin: Cumhacht an Chomhair. In Reiteoir! de chuid Macha Media do BBC NI agus RTÉ, déanfar fiosrú ar ghéarchéim na réiteoireachta sa CLG, spórt amaitéarach nach bhfaigheann na maoir ach a gcuid costais ar éigean aisti, ach faigheann siad drochíde go leor ó na himreoirí, na bainisteoirí, na tráchtairí agus ón lucht féachana.

In An Chamógaíocht de chuid Strident Media do BBC agus TG4, déanfar ceiliúradh ar thús agus ar fhás an chluiche páirce is gasta ar domhan agus an spórt ag tabhairt aghaidh ar an dúshlán is mó aige óna oidhreacht ársa go dtí mórthaispeántas an lae inniu. Tá Strident i mbun  Scéalta na Lochanna fosta, a rachaidh ar aistear ar son RTÉ, ar bhruacha, faoi thoinn agus ar an spéir ar an dá shainchomhartha is iontaí in Éirinn, Lough nEachach agus Loch Coirib.

In Ceol Comhrac 1798, sraith de 4 chlár do TG4, breathnóidh Imagine Media ar na scéalta, stair agus ar na hamhráin a bhaineann le 1798.
