ILBF documentary explores state of NI civil rights on BBC Two NI
Date Posted: October 3, 2018
Against the backdrop of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement, BBC Gaeilge documentary Ar Theallach an Dóchais (BBC Two Northern Ireland, Sunday 7 October, 10.15pm) explores the state of civil rights in Northern Ireland today.
Ar Theallach an Dóchais is an Imagine Media Production for BBC Gaeilge and TG4, made with the support of Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund.
Inspired by the civil rights movement in America, the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association was founded in the late 1960s to campaign against discrimination in jobs, housing and voting rights, and to establish a society based on fairness, equality and justice for all.
A group of socialists, nationalists, liberal unionists, republicans, and trade unionists formed the body which would have major success in tackling the inequalities and sectarianism of Northern Ireland society.
Ar Theallach an Dóchais explores how that vision still inspires a new generation, but for rights not even talked about in 1968.
The programme profiles six young advocates who work for change and looks at the key issues which are motivating them today
The six, Cara Ní Mhaonaigh, Deirdre McAliskey, Sam McCaw, Conchúr Ó Muadaigh, Sinéad Ní Mhearnóg and Seán Mac Brádaigh lobby for women’s rights, vulnerable young people in deprived loyalist and nationalist areas, children and minorities, Irish language speakers, rural communities challenging multinational development of local resources such as gold, and the housing-deprived and homeless.
Fiosraíonn clár faisnéise de chuid an CCG staid na gceart sibhialta i dTuaisceart Éireann ar BBC 2
Anois, agus cothrom 50 bliain ó bhunú Ghluaiseacht na gCeart Sibhialta á chomóradh, déanfaidh scannán faisnéise BBC Gaeilge Ar Theallach an Dóchais (BBC Two Northern Ireland, Dé Domhnaigh 7 Deireadh Fómhair, 10.15 i.n.) fiosrú ar staid na gceart sibhialta i dTuaisceart Éireann inniu.
Is léiriú de chuid Imagine Media é Ar Theallach an Dóchais do BBC Gaeilge agus TG4, agus rinneadh é le tacaíocht ó Chiste Craoltóireachta Gaeilge Scáileán Thuaisceart Éireann.
Fuair Cumann Ceart Sibhialta Thuaisceart Éireann a inspioráid ó ghluaiseacht na gceart sibhialta i Meiriceá. Bunaíodh an Cumann go mall sna 1960idí le feachtas a thógáil in aghaidh an leatroim maidir le cearta fostaíochta, tithíochta agus vótála, agus le sochaí a chur ar bun a bheadh bunaithe ar chothroime, ar chomhionannas agus ar cheartas do gach duine.
Grúpa sóisialaithe, náisiúnaithe, aontachtaithe liobrálacha, poblachtach agus ceardchumannaithe a tháinig le chéile leis an chumann a fhoirmiú, eagraíocht a mbeadh rath mór uirthi ina hiarrachtaí tabhairt faoi neamhionannas agus seicteachas na sochaí i dTuaisceart Éireann.
In Ar Theallach an Dóchais, fiosraítear an dóigh a mbaineann glúin úr inspioráid as an aisling a bhí acusan, ach le cearta a bhaint amach nach raibh trácht orthu fiú in 1968.
Tugann an clár cuntas ar seisear urlabhraithe óga a oibríonn le hathrú a dhéanamh ar an tsaol agus amharcann ar na saincheisteanna móra atá á spreagadh anois.
Is iad an seisear seo ná Cara Ní Mhaonaigh, Deirdre McAliskey, Sam McCaw, Conchúr Ó Muadaigh, Sinéad Ní Mhearnóg agus Seán Mac Brádaigh atá ag stocaireacht ar son chearta na mban, ar son daoine leochaileacha i gceantair dhílseacha agus náisiúnacha, páistí agus mionlach, chainteoirí Gaeilge, pobal faoin tuath atá ag seasamh in éadan na gcomhlachtaí ilnáisiúnta atá ag iarraidh na n-acmhainní áitiúla amhail an t-ór a fhorbairt, agus daoine nach bhfuil fáil acu ar thithíocht nó atá gan dídean.
