Seminar: Writing Character and Journey with Kate Leys

Writing Character and Journey Seminar with Kate Leys
Kate Leys will look at story, structure, character and dialogue. She will focus in particular on subtext, aka the dark art of letting us know precisely who your characters are without you – or them – telling us.
How do people give themselves away? How can we understand someone without voice over, exposition or descriptive speeches? She will also look at structure, both as an idea of the overall shape and organisation of a story and as a way to keep a story driving forwards. And she’ll take as many of your questions as time allows.
Kate Leys is a script and story editor.
She has worked for many years on feature films and TV series. She also works on documentaries, animation, short films, audio and occasionally theatre. As well as working extensively in the UK she works all over the world, particularly in Australia, NZ, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, Nigeria, Norway and Finland. In one day last year she worked with filmmakers in Vienna, Beirut, Tblisi and Maputo. She also works often with global indigenous filmmakers.
Kate mentors film talent and speaks at festivals and industry events all over the world, including the Edinburgh Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Festival, Helsinki Film Festival, Sarajevo Film Festival, Bafta, BIFA, the BFI, the UK National Film School, Norway’s National Film School; The Sami Film Institute, ImagineNATIVE in Canada, Storiculture in India, Adidas, BBC Radio Features, Oslo Series Days, Imagine in Amsterdam, ProPro in Vienna and many more.
