Date Posted: March 21, 2024

NVTV is honoured to announce the broadcast premiere of VC of Kilkeel: The Story of Robert Hill Hanna, an evocative documentary that celebrates the heroic life of Robert Hill Hanna, a son of Northern Ireland who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his valour during World War I. Funded by Northern Ireland Screen’s Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund, the documentary will make its television debut on 1st April 2024, on Freeview channel 7 and 159 on Virgin.

Robert Hill Hanna, born in Kilkeel, Northern Ireland, emigrated to Canada where he worked as a logger before enlisting in the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve in WWI. His acts of bravery and leadership on the battlefield epitomise the courage and determination of a hero. The documentary follows Bob Hanna, Robert’s son, on an emotional journey to uncover his father’s early life, his heroism and the lasting impact of his deeds.

The documentary’s first broadcast follows a special screening at the Schomberg Society in Kilkeel, for those who contributed to the documentary’s production, Hanna’s relatives, and the individuals whose fundraising and hard work made the erection of his statue in Kilkeel in 2022 possible. This event not only celebrates the documentary’s completion but also honours the collective memory and respect the community holds for Robert Hill Hanna.

VC of Kilkeel: The Story of Robert Hill Hanna is a testament to the spirit of heroism and the enduring bonds of community. Through intimate interviews, archival footage, and expert commentary, the film offers viewers a unique insight into the life of a man who, despite the odds, rose to the highest ranks of valour and honour. The documentary will also be available to view worldwide via NVTV’s new Ulster-Scots website; ulsterscots.nvtv.co.uk.
