Netflix commissions short film about Derry rapper HYFIN
Date Posted: February 23, 2022
Local filmmakers Sean Mullan and Michael Barwise have launched their 12-minute documentary, HYFIN, after being selected to produce the film as part of the Netflix Documentary Talent Fund.
HYFIN is about Jordan-Lee Brady-James, aka HYFIN, who is in pursuit to become Derry-Londonderry’s first professional rapper. Jordan-Lee had his dualities set out from day one. Growing up in a city where everyone could be British, Irish or both, he simply wanted to be a pro-swimmer. His dreams of escaping Derry’s daily grind came to a halt, as he lay twisted inside a crushed vehicle. Waiting on an ambulance, he turned on the car radio; between then and recovery HYFIN was born.
Netflix’s Documentary Talent Fund was open to filmmakers across the UK with the chance to make a short documentary film with a budget of between £20,000 and £40,000 each, with the films living on Netflix’s social channels.
Successful candidates had access to guidance from Netflix and industry professionals to produce the finished pieces.
Launching in 2022, the ten documentaries will be showcased at an event that will have a considerable number of industry heads present. Additionally, each team will own and retain their own copyright throughout the process.
