Film Hub NI announces tour of award-winning documentary Lyra

Date Posted: February 9, 2023

Film Hub NI, part of the BFI Film Audience Network, is pleased to announce a tour of LYRA across Northern Ireland.

Eleven community cinemas and venues in Northern Ireland will show this award-winning documentary as part of this spring’s Film Hub NI (FHNI) Collective Tour, which brings the best independent films to local places across the north. The tour starts at Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre in Limavady on Thursday 2nd March and finishes at The Courthouse in Bangor on Wednesday 29th March.

Directed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Alison Millar, LYRA is a beautiful and heartfelt film about the life and death of the internationally renowned Northern Irish investigative journalist Lyra McKee.

Through a rich archive of audio recordings, field notes and interviews with those who knew her, LYRA tells the story of a life fearlessly committed to truth and justice for forgotten crimes. The result is a complex picture of Northern Ireland’s political history, bringing into sharp focus the ways in which the 1998 Good Friday agreement – with its promised end to violence for future generations – has struggled to be fully realised.

Alison Millar said: “We are thrilled that audiences right across NI will have the opportunity to spend some time with the extraordinary person that was Lyra McKee during the Film Hub NI Collective tour of LYRA. It is particularly poignant that the tour will take place in the run up to the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement and against the current political backdrop but we hope that the film reminds people that our fragile peace is worth fighting for and that no more senseless and tragic deaths should happen to any family.”

Each screening on the tour will feature a live Q&A with guests including Alison, Lyra’s siblings Nicola and Andrew Corner, and Sara Canning – Lyra’s partner.

FHNI is part of the BFI Film Audience Network, a UK wide project to ensure that the greatest choice of film is available to diverse audiences across Northern Ireland. This Collective tour is supported by the Department for Communities through Northern Ireland Screen.
