Cinema Eye Awards recognises Nothing Compares in its 2023 Unforgettables and Audience Choice Long List

Sinead O'Connor

Cinema Eye Honors, the organization that recognises outstanding artistic achievement in nonfiction and documentary films & series, has announced this year’s Audience Choice Long List as well as the 2023 Unforgettables. Nothing Compares, from Belfast director Kathryn Ferguson, has been recognised in both categories.  The documentary charts Sinéad OʼConnorʼs phenomenal rise to worldwide fame and examines how she used her voice at the height of her stardom, before her iconoclastic personality led to her exile from the pop mainstream. This comes hot on the heels of Nothing Compares’ two Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominations earlier this week (Best Archival Documentary and Best Music Documentary).

Focusing on O’Connor’s prophetic words and deeds from 1987 to 1993, the film presents an authoritative, richly cinematic portrait of this fearless artist through a contemporary feminist lens. Nothing Compares is in cinemas now.

With its Unforgettables, Cinema Eye was the first awards body to introduce an honor recognizing documentary subjects, their relationship with their filmmakers and their essential contributions to documentary film. Sinéad O’Connor is recognised in this year’s Unforgettables list. The full list can be found here.

In addition, Nothing Compares was also recognised as part of Cinema Eye’s Audience Choice Prize Long List. It is one of 16 films selected by the Cinema Eye Feature Film Nominations Committee for their “ability to engage, entertain, inspire, outrage, aggravate or otherwise connect with audiences.” Voting is open now on the Cinema Eye website here and documentary film fans from around the world will select the 10 films that will be nominated in the category. Voting will close at 11:59 pm PT on November 1, 2022.

Cinema Eye will announce its full list of nominations, including the 10 films selected by global documentary lovers for the Audience Choice Prize, on Thursday, November 10. Audience Choice final voting will open in December. The 16th Annual Cinema Eye Awards Ceremony will take place Thursday, January 12, 2023 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens.

The 16th Annual Cinema Eye Honors Week and Awards Ceremony will take place in January 2023 in New York City, where a series of celebratory events bring together many of the year’s most accomplished filmmakers.
