Northern Ireland’s Inaugural Screen Industry Sustainability Showcase Drives Positive Change

Northern Ireland Screen, in partnership with BBC Northern Ireland and Belfast Harbour, successfully hosted the inaugural Screen Industry Sustainability Showcase at Belfast Harbour Studios on Wednesday, 2nd October. The event brought together key players from across the screen industry sector to explore solutions that promote environmental responsibility, economic viability, and creative innovation.

The event, held as part of the BBC Climate Creatives initiative, featured panels with leading sustainability voices including representatives from Albert, PACT, and Studio Ulster, alongside local suppliers Balloo Hire and Sunbelt Rentals who shared insights into their sustainability policies and offerings. These discussions, aimed at highlighting the industry’s collective responsibility, centred around the adoption of sustainable production methods and the challenges and opportunities these present for local producers and broadcasters.

Economy Minister, Conor Murphy praises Northern Ireland’s screen sustainability team on visit to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms set

Economy Minister Conor Murphy has visited the set of the HBO Original drama series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in Glenarm, Co. Antrim. The six part high-end TV drama series filmed on location across Northern Ireland and in Titanic Studios with funding support from Northern Ireland Screen.

During the set visit Minister Murphy heard from the production’s sustainability team who, with support from Northern Ireland Screen, has implemented a number of sustainability initiatives. One such initiative is the implementation of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) replacing the use of diesel fuel in the wide range of facility vehicles that transport equipment to each set location and all on location generators. It immediately reduces carbon emissions by up to 90% and requires no additional infrastructure investment.
