New Writer Focus: Top Tips for Writers

Want to make your script shine? Check out these tips to help you refine your story, format it like a pro, and craft a compelling submission that will grab attention.

1.Keep it simple

Less is more- Avoid overloading your story with unnecessary details. Focus on descriptions that enhance the plot or reveal key aspects of your characters. Keep the flow moving and let the action and dialogue do the heavy lifting.

2. Hook them in 10

Look carefully at your pacing—keep it tight and engaging. Introduce your protagonist, establish their world, and give us a reason to care about their journey. Every moment in those first 10 pages should pull the reader further into the story.

3. Stay authentic

Write with authenticity and originality while respecting the conventions of your genre. Your unique voice and perspective are what will make your story stand out, but delivering on what readers love about the genre ensures they’ll stay engaged.

4. Format like a pro

Your script should be in industry-standard format: Courier font, 12pt, and polished to perfection. A clean, professional format makes a great first impression.

5. Put your spin on it

Even if you’re working within a familiar genre, bring a fresh take. Think about what hasn’t been done before and show us your unique perspective on the story.

6. Keep it around 90

For feature films, the sweet spot is about 90 pages. Keep your script tight and engaging—every page should add to the story.

7. Nail that logline

Your logline is your elevator pitch. It’s got to hook us in one or two sentences. A strong logline can make your story stand out before we’ve even read the script.

8. Showcase your story

A strong synopsis and story outline are just as important as the script itself. Use these to highlight your characters, plot, and the exciting journey ahead.

9. Be open to collaboration

This isn’t just about your script; it’s about growth. Monthly writers’ room meetings, seminars, and feedback are key parts of the process. Be ready to learn and evolve.

10. One shot, one idea

You can only submit one project, so make it your best one. Take your time to refine it and ensure it represents your strongest work.
