A Fond Fareweel – An Ulster-Scots Legend Haes His Last Wheen O Words

Date Posted: February 25, 2025
The final talk given by Liam Logan is set to be released on Wednesday 26th Feb on the Thran Ulster-Scots podcast and radio show. In December 2023, Liam suffered serious health issues and while he continues to fight these health problems, his family have announced that he will be unable to take part in any future media projects.
The Thran podcast is proudly produced by local production company Negative Waves and funded by Northern Ireland Screen’s Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund.
Liam Logan has dedicated much of his life to reviving and recording Ulster-Scots language and culture, challenging misconceptions and striving for authenticity. He was a regular contributor to many programmes on BBC Radio Ulster, NVTV and beyond. In recent years he worked closely with the Negative Waves production company producing award-winning short films, and a host of documentaries and podcasts.
Just weeks before he became ill, Liam delivered an Ulster-Scots themed talk to a packed Kilrea Orange Hall, alongside local band Scad The Beggars. That recording is now being made available through the Thran podcast, created by his friends and colleagues at Negative Waves, Tristan Crowe and Mick Crossey.
“Liam’s contribution to the world of Ulster-Scots won’t be fully realised for many years to come. His work has been invaluable to us, but will be even more important to future generations.” said Tristan Crowe. “This recording not only showcases his vast knowledge but also his humour, charisma, and love for entertaining and educating audiences. We miss him and his contributions greatly.”
Northern Ireland Screen’s Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund Executive Heidi McAlpin added, “Liam is such a big character in the Ulster-Scots world – and beyond – and it has been my pleasure to get to know him over these past few years. His work across the many projects funded by the USBF has provided a significant archive of contemporary Ulster-Scots voices and stories, led by the man himself. He will be greatly missed by all who have worked with him but his lasting legacy will continue in work such as this entertaining and often thought-provoking podcast.”
Thran is a monthly Ulster-Scots podcast that, over the past year, has featured interviews by Liam with notable poets and authors such as Charlie Gillen, Stephen Dornan, Anne McMaster, and Angeline King. It also welcomes fresh perspectives on Ulster-Scots culture, with guests like Bonny Cooper, originally from China, and Adelaide Mensah, originally from Ghana, who offer unique insights into their countries’ relationships with multiple languages and dialects. Liam’s episode will be the last in the current series.
This episode will air on fUSe FM on Wednesday 26th Feb at 12pm, and will be available on Spotify shortly afterwards.
Listeners in the Ballymoney area can tune in to fUSe FM at 107.5 FM, or the station is available to anyone online, or via the TuneIn app. To follow Thran, subscribe on Spotify by searching for Thran or use the direct link: Spotify Link.
