New Irish Language Series La Vie sa Bhruiséil on RTÉ
Date Posted: December 5, 2024
From the corridors of power in the European Parliament to the busy GAA pitches in the heart of this bustling city, La Vie sa Bhruiséil follows some of the Gaeilgeoirí building careers and homes in the multilingual capital of Europe.
La Vie sa Bhruiséil features members of the growing Irish language community in Brussels as they navigate a multi-lingual and multi-cultural world at the heart of the EU.
The three-part series will air on RTÉ from Monday 9th of December at 8pm and was funded by Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund.
We explore the similarities and differences between life in Brussels, and life back home in Ireland, through issues like education, childcare, transport and the health system as well as discussing the quality of the Guinness, and the contested view that you can have much better craic in Brussels than in Dublin.
While we see a little of the institutional side of the city, we also visit schools, parks, sports grounds, cafés and pubs in this most international of cities, in the company of our wonderful Irish ambassadors including Aislínn Nic Ruairí and Páidí Ó Dubháin, from Tyrone and Co. Down who are raising their two young boys in multi-lingual Brussels. In comparison, Ciarán Ó Ceallaigh and his wife Áine wanted a Gaeltacht upbringing for their four children, so Ciarán commutes between Brussels and Conamara. Micheál Ó Conchúir is one of the longest standing members of the Irish language community in the city, after moving ‘from Skellig to An Bheilg in 1995.’ EU translator Seaghan Mac an tSionnaigh is very happy in his new city, after years spent studying and working abroad, and Ríoghnach Hyland has the best of both worlds – an international work environment with an NGO, alongside a very Irish experience with the GAA and Conradh na Gaeilge in the mini Gaeltacht of Brussels.

Ó hallaí na cumhachta i bParlaimint na hEorpa go páirceanna gníomhacha CLG i gcroílár na cathrach bríomhaire seo, leanann La Vie sa Bhruiséil roinnt de na Gaeilgeoirí atá ag tógáil saolta is slite beatha i bpríomhchathair ilteangach na hEorpa.
Léiríonn La Vie sa Bhruiséil baill de phobal na Gaeilge atá ag méadú sa Bhruiséil agus iad ag dul i ngleic le saol ilteangach agus ilchultúrtha an AE.
Maoinithe ag an Chiste Craoltóireachta Gaeilge Scáileán Thuaisceart Éireann, craolfar an tsraith trí-chuid seo ar RTÉ ón Luan, 9ú Nollaig ar 8.i.n.
Fiosraíonn muid na cosúlachtaí agus na héagsúlachtaí idir an saol sa Bhruiséil agus an saol ar ais in Éirinn, le plé ar oideachas, cúram leanaí, iompar poiblí agus an córas sláinte chomh maith le caighdeán an Guinness a phlé, agus an dearcadh conspóideach gur bhfaighidh tú craic níos fearr sa Bhruiséil ná i mBaile Átha Cliath.
Cé go dtugtar blaiseadh de thaobh institiúide na cathrach, tugann muid cuairt freisin ar scoileanna, páirceanna, ionaid spóirt, caiféanna agus tithe tábhairne sa chathair idirnáisiúnta seo i gcuideachta ár n-ambasadóirí iontacha Éireannacha ina measc Aislínn Nic Ruairí agus Páidí Ó Dubháin, as Tír Eoghain agus Co. an Dúin atá ag tógáil a mbeirt bhuachaillí óga sa Bhruiséil ilteangach. I gcomparáid leis sin, tá Ciarán Ó Ceallaigh agus a bhean Áine ag iarraidh tógáil Ghaeltachta dá gceathrar clainne, mar sin caithfidh Ciarán taisteal idir an Bhruiséil agus Conamara. Tá Micheál Ó Conchúir ar dhuine de na baill is faide ó phobal na Gaeilge sa chathair, i ndiaidh dó bogadh ‘ón Sceilg go dtí an Bheilg’ i 1995. Tá an t-aistritheoir AE
Seaghan Mac an tSionnaigh thar a bheith sásta ina chathair nua, i ndiaidh blianta a chaitheamh ag staidéar agus ag obair thar lear, agus tá dhá shaol difrúil ag Ríoghnach Hyland – le timpeallacht oibre idirnáisiúnta le NGO, mar aon le eispéireas an-Éireannach leis an CLG agus le Conradh na Gaeilge i mion-Ghaeltacht na Bruiséile.
