Kneecap nominated for 14 British Independent Film Awards

Stars Mia McKenna-Bruce and Vivian Oparah announced the British Independent Film Awards 2024 nominees this morning at One Hundred Shoreditch, London. Celebrating remarkable films and outstanding talent from the British film industry and beyond, this year’s list highlights the UK’s brightest new talent. Northern Ireland Screen is delighted to see Kneecap lead the nominations with an impressive 14.
Kneecap, Rich Peppiatt’s comedy following the west Belfast hip-hop trio and their mission to save their mother tongue, is nominated for Best Director, Best Screenplay, The Douglas Hickox Award (Best Debut Director) and Best Debut Screenwriter.
The Kneecap trio Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, JJ Ó Dochartaigh are nominated for Best Joint Lead Performance. The film is also nominated for Best British Independent Film plus eight craft categories: Best Casting (Carla Stronge), Best Cinematography (Ryan Kernaghan), Best Costume Design (Zjena Glamocanin), Best Editing (Julian Ulrichs, Chris Gill), Best Music Supervision (Gary Welch, Jeanette Rehnstrom), Best Original Music (Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante), Best Production Design (Nicola Moroney) and Best Sound (Louise Burton, Brendan Rehill, Aza Hand, Chris Woodcock).
Kneecap is based on the origin story of the riotous and ground-breaking Irish-language rap trio Kneecap, the film stars the band’s Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí in their acting debuts alongside Academy Award® nominated Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs, 12 Years a Slave), Simone Kirby (Hidden Assets, Jimmy’s Hall), Jessica Reynolds (Outlander), Fionnuala Flaherty (Ros na Rún) and Josie Walker (Belfast, The Wonder). Set in west Belfast in 2019, it chronicles how fate brings the trio together and how they then go on to “change the sound of Irish music forever”.
Kneecap was produced by Trevor Birney and Jack Tarling for Fine Point Films and Mother Tongues Films, with Patrick O’Neill at Wildcard acting as Co-Producer.
Funding for the film was provided by Northern Ireland Screen, the Irish Language Broadcast Fund, Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland, the BFI (awarding National Lottery funding), Coimisiún na Meán and TG4, with backing from Great Point Media.
Winners will be revealed at the BIFA ceremony at the roundhouse on Sunday 8th December.
Kneecap was also recently nominated for European University Film Award at the European Film Academy, and today announced a further nomination for European Discovery – Prix Fipresci (Fipresci Prize). The winners will be announced at the European Film Awards ceremony in Lucerne on 7 December 2024.
