Date Posted: May 29, 2024

The stories behind the country’s GAA silverware- A six-part series for TG4 presented by Gráinne McElwain.

Produced by Imagine Media, with support from Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund, Scéalta na gCorn – Series 2 will broadcast on TG4 weekly, starting June 5th 2024 at 8.30pm

Scéalta na gCorn – Series 2 sees Gráinne McElwain back on the road again as she travels across Ireland visiting clubs and county grounds, learning the lesser-known stories behind our nation’s Gaelic games trophies. She will find out how some cups are named after Irish revolutionary patriots such as Thomas Ashe and Joe McGarrity, how other trophies are named after sporting heroes such as Nickey Rackard and Dermot Earley and how even more are named after grassroots members, their memory perpetuated through the trophies and cups in their honour.

The journey begins in Tipperary at Semple Stadium, where Gráinne will learn about trophies like the Dan Breen and Seán Treacy Cups and visits Lár a Páirce Museum to see the Cross of Cashel Trophy and discover the story behind the Dillon Quirke Cup. In Kerry, she will uncover the Bishop Moynihan Cup and the Veronica Stack Cup and hear about football hero Con Brosnan and the Páidí Ó Sé tournament. In Wexford, she learns about the Nickey Rackard Cup, the Hanrahan Cup, and the Seamus Keevan’s Cup, as well as cups honouring women like the Marie Lynch and Sandra Keane Cups. Travelling to Down, Gráinne will explore cups named after local heroes and historical figures, such as Betsy Gray and Kevin Mussen. In Tyrone, she discovers the Hugh O’Neill Cup, the Sigerson Cup, and the Cormac McAnallen Cup, along with a camogie tournament in honour of Anne Jordan. The series concludes in Cavan, where Gráinne will uncover the story behind the Anglo-Celt Cup, the John Joe O’Reilly tournament, and newer trophies like the Tom Walsh, Michelle Keating, and Amy Sheridan Cups.
