ScreenSkills’ Stepping up to Film Production Management training programme
Date Posted: October 20, 2022
A Production Manager (PM) can make or break a production and its budget. Yet despite the importance of the role, there has been little in the way of tailored, high-level training available to support them. Most PMs have had to learn informally, on the job – leading to inconsistent work practices across the industry, resulting in increased levels of stress and anxiety for the individuals. For the companies, this has meant added risk to a production, added workload for the PMs’ line manager, or inflated salaries having to be paid for over-experienced PMs taking on more junior responsibilities.
ScreenSkills’ Stepping up to Film Production Management training, delivered by DV Talent, will help those stepping up to PM – including junior PMs – get a thorough foundation in all the key elements of the job, ensuring they can learn industry best-practices, develop their confidence and competence, and build a supportive peer network.
Delegates will complete the course with a full understanding of the crucial elements of being a PM, such as effective scheduling, practical budgeting, as well as essential soft skills. The course will also teach the people skills needed to work effectively with contributors and with teams, as well as key fully up-to-date compliance, logistical and health and safety considerations. Other areas covered include location work, stunts, SFX sequences, post-production, plus plenty of tips, tricks, and insights.
Delivered by highly experienced Line Producers currently working in the industry alongside veteran trainers with a wealth of experience of feature film and television drama productions.
The course is completely free. In addition, ScreenSkills will be working closely with participants to assist in setting up paid 5-week placements, shadowing on a production. We anticipate around half the cohort will be found placements.
There are two cohorts, one in London and one in Manchester, both across 4 days; 2 face-to-face and 2 online (including evening sessions).
This programme is supported by the ScreenSkills CPD Fund which invests in training for the scripted workforce thanks to contributions from National Lottery funds awarded by the BFI as part of the Future Film Skills programme.
To apply, production coordinators and junior production managers are required to have:
- At least 2-3 years professional industry experience in film or scripted TV
- A track-record in film looking to step up a level to be able to manage a production efficiently and with confident.
Closing date for London is Friday 11th November, and for Manchester will be Friday 3rd December.
ScreenSkills is particularly keen to recruit delegates from the nations and regions, and underrepresented groups, including lower socio-economic backgrounds to ensure we are representative of all.
