Takeover Film Festival set to ‘take over’ QFT screens

The seventh annual Takeover Film Festival ‘takes over’ Queen’s Film Theatre’s screens from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 February, with an exciting weekend of film previews, free short film screenings, manga illustration masterclass and live hip hop music from Belfast Hub Group, all organised by the enthusiastic QFT Youth Group, Takeover Film.
The Takeover Film Festival commences on Friday 19 February with an exclusive Northern Ireland premiere of the inspiring new feature film, King Jack, with exceptional performances from a young cast. Felix Thompson’s Tribeca-awarded debut is a gritty coming of age drama set in small town America.
Marion Campbell, Education and Outreach Officer at QFT said: “The Takeover Youth Panel have really excelled themselves with this year’s festival programme. This group of young people have created a programme not just full of great, enjoyable films, but films that really encourage you to think about issues very relevant to the time we are living in – race, diversity and equal rights. We are hugely excited that professional illustrator Richard McGilvray will come to Belfast to run a manga character illustration masterclass to share his drawing techniques with the lucky few, as part of the Anime Day on 21 Feb at QFT.”
The festival continues on Saturday and Sunday with a packed film programme, including a rare opportunity to see classic award-winning Japanese anime, Grave of the Fireflies and Speed Sisters, a new award winning documentary which follows the first all woman race car driving team in a male dominated sport in Palestine.
The closing film, Japanese anime The Case of Hana and Alice is the prequel to Iwai’s 2004 live-action film, Hana and Alice showcases an unusual rotoscope animation tool. Alice starts to investigate the disappearance of a classmate at her new school, she meets her neighbour Hana who is convinced that he’s still alive.
The Takeover Film team is made up of a group of teenage film enthusiasts who have a passion for film with an interest in a career in the creative industries. The project gives younger audiences access to wider viewing and filmmaking opportunities, as well as an insight on how film theatres are programmed. This year’s short film production Privilege of Choice will also be screening during the festival.
