Belfast Film Festival to host UK premiere of Deep Run

Screening at the Movie House, Dublin Road on 3rd August, Deep Run is one of three films the festival has scheduled as part of this year’s Belfast Pride. Executive produced by LGBTQ supporter Susan Sarandon and shot by filmmaker Hillevi Loven, Deep Run is a powerful verité portrait of trans life in rural North Carolina.
Exiled by her family and rejected by an ex, 17-year-old Spazz has no one to lean on for support. But when Spazz falls in love again and summons up the courage to become Cole, a strong-willed trans man, his candid humor and steadfast, all-inclusive Christian beliefs counter the bigotry he experiences daily. Deep Run is a powerful portrait of contemporary trans life.
In Summertime (Movie House, 4th August), revolution is in the air in early 1970s France and two women’s blossoming relationship faces challenges beyond their control.
Country girl Delphine encounters metropolitan Carole during a feminist protest in Paris. The spark of attraction between them is undeniable. They embark on a passionate, all-consuming love affair until everything comes to a dramatic halt when Delphine is recalled back to her parent’s farm in the aftermath of her father’s stroke. Carole is left desolate in the city, unable to picture life without the younger woman. However, it’s not until she ventures into Delphine’s world that Carole realises how much she truly loves her, or what is at stake for the two of them when that love is tested by those closest to them.
From vibrant scenes of civil unrest on the streets of Paris, to the lushly photographed rural landscape that make up the latter section of the film, Catherine Corsini has crafted a beautiful and sensual film about two women in love.
Voted Number 3 in the list of the 30 Best LGBT Films of All Time, Happy Together (Beanbag Cinema, 2nd August) is a stunning display of filmmaking style and a fascinating love story evenly mixed into one film.
Winner of the Best Director prize at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, Wong Kar-Wai’s Happy Together stars Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung as lovers living out the waning days of their relationship in this dazzlingly distinctive film. The expressionistic, stylized visual brilliance (courtesy of Australian cinematographer Christopher Doyle) of the film is breathtaking.
In addition to the Belfast Pride screenings, Belfast Film Festival’s summer programme will deliver over 50 events throughout Northern Ireland, including outdoor picnic screenings in Crescent Park, Sense and Sensibility at Malone House, The Wicker Man at the Giant’s Ring, Aliens and The Matrix at T13, and Enter the Dragon in Billy Murray’s ProKick gym in East Belfast.
Belfast Film Festival Director Michele Devlin said “Based on the last few weeks, we’re hedging our bets with what the weather will do in Belfast and have planned a two-month summer bonanza both outside and indoors. Belfast Film Festival’s now well-established and very popular annual summer programme is expected to attract audiences of around 5,000, helping to make the city an attractive destination for residents and tourists.”
