Short Steps 2012-13

PROMOTING A SHORT FILM CULTURE

Shorts Steps 2012-13 is a short film development scheme aimed at indigenous entry-level and emerging creative talent. This is a training scheme specifically for those who have previously not participated in a Short Steps programme.

The scheme will comprise a number of seminars focusing on the development, direction and production of short film, with a view to instilling best practice and recognizable industry standards, as well as to promote further a culture of short film in Northern Ireland and to reaffirm the importance of the genre in film production generally.

In order to assist in the selection process of potential participants on Short Steps 2012-13 and in preparation for the scheme, Northern Ireland Screen is hosting two events: an open screening of short films at QFT and a briefing session for writers.

1. Open Screening at QFT

We are inviting directors to submit their short film for screening at a special event in QFT on Thursday 23rd August at 6.40pm. Your film does not need to have had Northern Ireland Screen funding. As the number of screening slots is limited, to be considered you must complete the registration form below:

Completed forms must be returned to Christine Morrow, Short Film Co-ordinator, by email or by post to Northern Ireland Screen, 3rd Floor Alfred House, 21 Alfred Street, Belfast BT2 8ED no later than Thursday 16th August.

2. Writers’ Briefing in the Black Box

We are inviting writers and writer/directors to a briefing session in the Black Box on Friday 7th September at 2pm. You are asked to bring your short film ideas (script or treatment) for initial discussion.

The Selection Process

Following both these events, Northern Ireland Screen will select a number of projects for participation in Short Steps 2012-13.

The successful filmmakers will:

  • Attend 4 writers’ labs facilitated by a script development professional
  • Attend 3 directing sessions and lead a read-through of the short films
  • Pitch the short films developed to locally based producers

Northern Ireland Screen will host a number of screenings of local, national and international shorts of note to the participants throughout the process.
