Call to develop landmark documentaries

Northern Ireland Screen seeks applications to develop landmark documentaries with a view to supporting one of those development projects within the Landmark Documentary Production Scheme 2013-2014.

Only Northern Ireland based production companies are eligible to apply. For the avoidance of doubt “Northern Ireland based production companies” in this context means a company with an existing substantive production base within Northern Ireland.

The successful projects will deliver unique visions and voices on universal stories from Northern Ireland resident filmmakers. A documentary project focusing on arts based subjects would be particularly welcomed.

There is no prescribed duration and although Northern Ireland Screen’s preference is a broadcast hour, we will consider feature length projects too and may, if the rational is compelling, consider two-parters or mini-series. Nothing will be automatically excluded on duration.

This is a development call; projects that are already in production are not eligible.

Given that this development process is aimed at Northern Ireland Screen’s Landmark Documentary Production Scheme, we will be cautious about supporting projects that are likely to have a production budget of more than £200k due to a concern that at the end of the development period the producers will not be able to finance the production. As a guide the Landmark Documentary Production Scheme will invest up to £100k in the successful documentary project.

Up to four projects will be selected to be developed between November 2012 and April 2013 with the intention of selecting one for further development and, hopefully, production between April 2013 and March 2014.

The Landmark Documentary Production Scheme intends to fund one production each year. However, Northern Ireland Screen reserves the right to choose to fund or not fund production at its sole discretion.

Match funding for the development may be entirely in-kind and an expression of national or international broadcaster or sales agent interest is all that is needed at this stage. However, the case for developing any project is always strengthened by strong indications from sales agents or broadcasters that they are interested in the proposal.

Pre-application meetings are strongly encouraged, as is early application. For further information please email Head of Production, Andrew Reid, or call 028 90 232 444.
